Where can I go for help?
Spybot Search & Destroy

Lavasoft's Ad-Aware

SpywareInfo.com
Need to know if a program IS legitimate or spyware? Here is one location that can help you. Also includes several of the utilities to remove CoolWeb, MalWare, Browser Helper Objects and the more devious spyware instances.

Merijn ("Merlin")
A section of SpywareInfo.com that has very technical information on detecting and removing spyware

FireTrust.com
Provides both Mailwasher AND Benign which help you filter out the spam from your email and neutralize emails that do come through from potentially malicious code.
PC Magazine
An excellent resource for the technical and non-technical on software and hardware review, including spyware and virus trends and the research to eliminate them.

Other ways to fight Spyware
Run Both Spybot AND Ad-aware. They often will catch different items. SpyDoctor is a great purchased product .
If you are on Broadband internet connections (DSL, Cable, ISDN), UNPLUG the modem or turn your computers off at night.
Read the “End User License Agreements” – Yea, it’s boring…. But it will often tell you if the software being installed is going to add monitoring software
RUN BACKUPS of your System regularly!!! Backups should be rotated and on either CD or a hard drive other than your main computer system. If you have to reinstall your system, the expense will be WORTH it verses the headbanging you will endure without backups.
Filter your e-mail. Run spyware detection software regularly and often!
Do not "quarantine" the little boogers.... Just DELETE them.
Deny any “ActiveX” software you have not specifically requested
Know where your teens/kids/spouse/pets are surfing... AND... Know who and where they are chatting with
Avoid File Sharing and Free Music Sharing Services
Set your browser security settings to at LEAST medium (IE 6.0)

If you are infected, and simple removal tools do not work, contact an expert. Some removal methods require in-depth technical knowledge of the operating system.

HHWD can assist, or can refer you to other experts in the CSRA who are available for help.
